Suspension And Axle Upgrades

Front coilovers ready to go on.

1 February 2008

Spring 2008 Suspension and Axle upgrades: front coilovers with adjustable Gaz shock inserts, roller strut top mounts and a 3.44 rear axle.

The front suspension upgrades are for improved front end feel and adjustability. It's certainly made a difference, and the car is definitely faster as a result. Faster? Yes, since it's more controlled and predictable and less bouncy you can go faster and remain in control.

The rear axle was changed to bring the gearing more into line with the cogs in the MT75 box. Previously the car was a bit chuggy at 30mph in 4th through villages. Now its as you would expect, seems perfectly geared and has also brought the speedo back into line (previously it would under-read horribly - 70mph on the speedo was a real world 85mph!).

The axle swap has improved the acceleration at the expense of a bit of top speed - but I've no idea what the top speed is anyway!

The rear axle is a 3.44:1 ratio from a 2.0L Laser capri. Its physically identical to the 2.8i capri item except for the final drive ratio (2.8i axle = 3.09:1 ratio). In fact I even swapped the half shafts over to save myself from having to bash out and refit the longer wheel studs.

There are some nice pics of the upgrade in the Gallery: click here.
